31 DAYS OF POETRY- DAY 22- NO I THINK NOT- by Sam De Poet

$

When the nail breaks the Camel's back,
What's left?
More heavy lifting?

No I think not!

When a goat gets pushed to the wall,
What does it do?
More running scared?
From cowardly chases?

No I think not?

When the final nail gets hammered into the coffin,
What happens?
Lazarus rising from the dead?
Or Joseph the carpenter unseating the nails?

No I think not!

When the Lion keeps bullying Buffaloes,
What happens?
Will they run scared trampling on innocent grasses?
Scared to death from the Jungle King's harasses?

No I think not!

Name: Enobakhare Samuel Ogbemudia aka Sam De Poet and Pen Wielder.

Inspiration: In writing poetry, basically everything inspires Him, nature, religion, politics, things such as the love of a mother for her children or the patriotism of a citizen to His country. He is inspired virtually by anything you can pinpoint, anything visible and anything you can picture in your imagination. He is a routine kind of poet, i.e.He writes regularly, going as far as calling on inspiration rather than waiting for it.

His journey into poetry: started as far back as the early stage of the new millennium. Unlike most poets, he doesn't have same stories or history like they do, although he read books(Prose) voraciously, he wasn't a literature student at any point in time. He was in fact a Science Student through out Secondary School. After Secondary school he developed the urge to start writing, by that time he has read so much online and offline. He toyed with prose a little, but his interest for it wasn't as intense like when he tried out Poetry. The story of how Sam started poetry is as simple as it gets, he practically picked up his pen one day and started writing. The first poem he wrote was titled "If Only" since then he hasn't looked back.

What He aim for in the art is geared towards making a change, being able to affect lives positively in all spheres of life and possibly in all climes too. He wants to be able to get to a point where he can leave something behind that will live on, something that can surpass time.

31 DAYS OF POETRY- DAY 23- DIRTY LAUNDRY- by Kariuki Wa Nyamu

Throw out the dirty laundry
of silence
at incorrect supremacy
without any trace of shame
and let the world see
for it has been a great while
living a deadly lie of a century!

Yes, throw out the dirty laundry
of ignorance, poverty and disease
and let the world over see
that we’ve successfully failed
to win this war
that our late founding father
of nation declared
decades and decades ago!

Throw out the dirty laundry
of non-independence
of African States
and the cancer of neo-colonialism
that has reigned for years on end
for we’re weary of commissioning a lie
that we long crushed
this malady
upon gaining Independence!

Yes, let the world now know
that we’re not yet independent
courtesy of Marekani!

Yes, throw out the dirty laundry
of tribalism, rashness and pride
slowly eating away our folks
for that’s the only option left
Yell out “help! heelp! HEEEELLLLP!”
Down, down deceit!
Down, down gluttony!
For it isn’t worth
living a day dream!

Yes, throw out the dirty laundry
that frustrates our assertiveness
and open-mindedness
while we deliberate on
far-sighted issues of our nation
in roadside congress
of the countless unwaged youths!

Throw out the dirty laundry
of terror, arrogance and intimidation
inflicted on the
poor contemptible compatriots
who’ll  never obtain
any university degree
but are proud owners
of revolutionary
ideals for our nation!

Yes, let’s have a whole wash up!
Since lying on these cushions
of fear and tolerance
must have ruined us enough!
For indeed,
these perfumes of silence
             lie to us
            and the world over!
            Proclaiming of
our spotlessly-clean laundry
that lets out an elegant scent
Yet the stains
are daylight visible!

Oh my! Oh my!
Now more than ever
we must honestly admit
that we’re damn filthy!
And until we confess this sham
and do an out– and– out washing
we shall forever live
a HUGE lie of

WRECK!

31 DAYS OF POETRY- DAY 24- SHE’S JUST A GIRL- by Emmanuel Faith

$

0
She’s strong but brittle;
Weird a little
She’s got her ups, her highs and peak
But her ‘low key’ could make you sick
Please, don’t on her faults dwell
Just realize she is a girl

She’s got her cramps and visitors
That shrinks her like harsh creditors
She groans and moans in heinous pain
Thanks to this monthly vicious villain
Yet her presence brings a lovely smell
And you smile that’s a great belle

She could dance, twist, wriggle or shake
And leave your sleeping emotions awake
She could dare a peck or a mild kiss
And make you wish the world should cease
She could drag you into deep well
Until you know she’s just a girl

Either in skirt or flowing gown
Revealing attire that make soul drown
From her luscious lucid curves
To mellifluous empty bluffs
With joy you’d follow her to hell
Until you know she is a girl

You stare at her lascivious lips
Kidnapped by shapes of her hips
Be patient to see her wrinkled face
When tattered with tears like lace
Then you’d have great tale to tell
That at the end she’s just a girl

She may be Cinderella, an angel
With smoothened hair and well permed gel
She could charm you with her smiles
And sweet words that make butter flies
Dear open your blinded eyes
She is not more than a girl

She could be strong and tenacious
Fast, focused and fastidious
Disciplined than a strict cop
In few seconds she burst up
Don’t panic or ring an alarmed bell
Remember she’s but a girl

She could be your future wife
Your boss, colleague or partner in life
But now, she plays loose in your court
Give her care, not pains or hurt
Don’t make her goods you buy or sell
Respect her ‘cause she is a girl…….

31 DAYS OF POETRY- DAY 25- PRELUDE TALES- by Ijalusi Samuel

Our fathers did eat
Kola nut and drank palm wine
As the light that beckons
Gleamed from the shoulders of our visitors
Who rode in on caged drift,
Whose words were persuasively poisonous,
Whipping us with western ways.

Our mother dwells
Dwells in a sanatorium
After the theatrics interval
Of orchestrated lords
The mist of this dawn
Is yet to be broken
As subvert mud.

Our ancestral home
Is crumbling as a snake slithering
Upward the hill of Sinai
My age sing praises to parentage
To this junction journeyed just far
Is unbelievable to the dreams

Googled before the lords.

31 DAYS OF POETRY- DAY 26- STAYING IN THE WIND- by Mesioye Johnson

$

we start
by molding the dusts
left in us into stones
and throwing it at nothing
hoping it darts men
in pinnacles of shredded shadows
who call men to glory
with melodies
from the cathedral of ghosts.

there is a revival of assembled bedlams
filing into bodies that now know
that peace is a silent man
having prayers in the throat of men
with supplications of the living
who speak in tongues of blood,
of bones,
of fleshes,
which covers the altar of dirges
where burning men are incense
finding salvation
in the congregation of the dead—
a miracle of roaming spirits.

dead men
now learn the language of silence
with their maggoty intestines—
a way of communicating with rots,
so,
we run into canal of gone spirits
to draw life on the tears of scars
where we're colours of fire
on the face of cuts and lusts
while an ash is a room in our bellies,
we have many rooms.

the wind
is a home
of naked children
chasing what they do not see
but feel its wings under their skins:
this is how we run into bodies
with flowing thorns of blood.

staying in the wind
is keeping these memories
under one's feet
and setting it upon fire
which knows the texture of stagnant rivers
and how tears drown seas
in faceless things.

Like a snake strolling to citadel...
With visible curly moves...
It fills my nostrils...
Inhaling the best of scents..

The first puff hits my chest hard...
With a deep breath in between..
I cough out the last of my worries..
And shed a single tear in comfort..

Love in smoke..
A unified scene in peace..
Passed it on to a brother...
His throats longer for it..

With mixed saliva of friendship...
New flavors added...
The second puff was much better...
It erased hatred in humanity..

War at the end of victory...
We battle for the last puff...
Everyone loves the spiritual content...
I want to feel the fire that burns my corner lips...

Orowale Samuel Kolapo popularly known as Baba K by his fans is a native of Okeigbo, Ondo State.. He started writing Poems and articles since his junior class in secondary school, also a musician and Navy personnel.

we are one percent of water
one percent of beer or barley or blood (any could come first)
one percent of plant: twisted fibre or grass blades or geranium pulled out of flower pots
the rest are ghosts that have walked with us all these years
and have refused to go home
because home has now become our bodies:
one round holed urn,
a ghost town in a war torn city

Chibuihe-Light Obi is a poet, memoirist and creative photography enthusiast. His writings aim to interrogate language, identity and memory; to probe silence and confront stereotype. He aims  to use poetry to push the boundaries of silence and in this way, spark useful conversations around certain issues, especially identity.

He discovered poetry the morning after the ill fated Dana air crash and has since then been experimenting with the genre. He draws his inspiration mostly from personal struggles and the need to define or discover one's self and express this self without fear of censorship or sanction.

He majored in Political Science with a minor in Special Education and works as a part time teacher and a part time maverick; alternating between classroom and photo room or wherever the spirit leads.

31 DAYS OF POETRY- DAY 29- A UNITED AFRICA- by Valentine Vabec Mbagu

Proclaim ye this naked prophesies to the running pregnant sea
That Africa will be the historic eyes from which all nations will see,
An Empire that will rise up to a fortified climax of supreme power;
Tell it to nations that Africa will stand tall as a mighty rising tower.

Though she rides through the storms of rough poisonous fields,
Still from her virgin breast will be sucked milk of democratic yields;
Her land will be the Eden tree from where all great rivers will flow,
A United Africa on whose fertile soil beacons of wealth will grow.

Africa will no more breed slaves nor be a color of discrimination
But a centre of honey for all bees to be attracted in open invitation,
Upon her civilization will be the bait for all nation's eyes to migrate,
The African culture will form standards for all countries to emulate.

United will be the States of Africa as she commands raw influence
And attain the throne of sovereignty and supreme core dominance:
For the seeds of Adam will desire to feed her eyes than being told,
Then will the beauty of Africa rise above all nation's treasured gold.

The tale of a United Africa will be heard across the burning horizon,
Her Olive trees will yield much fruits than the cedars of Lebanon;
An Empress that'll pride herself in a fortified climax of core power,
Tell it to nations that United will be the sovereign States of Africa.

Mbagu Valentine Chigozie is a student of the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka where he's currently studying business administration and management. He also goes by the name Vabec. Writing for him, is a way of purging out oneself; a therapy to stand sane in a world where the concept of all has been lost.

He started poetry in 2013 but was fully passionate about it in 2014. His journey through the literary world remains a mystery yet to be unveiled because he passionately despised Literature back in secondary school. Also, his source of inspiration comes from God, music and the happenings around his environment.

He has a passion that is geared towards illuminating the entire globe with mind blowing words that will transform, motivate and inspire all generations.

He lives to leave a legacy and a footprint on the sands of time and the pages of history, that he ventured the ocean of poetry with exploits and impacts that will forever be remembered as long as history exists.

31 DAYS OF POETRY- DAY 30- EXCUSE ME DEATH- by Alozor Michael Ikechukwu

I need a little of your time
To get some issues clear and straight
I won’t be having much of you
It won’t be long and you'll be gone!

I hear you master is of hades
In need of more bones for his flames
forcing you freely to operate
And feed him with more blood harvest!

Some say your master owns the world
And uses you the way he likes
Setting you upon his cherries
To bring them home to be with him!

But who you work for I care not
The way you operate I care for
why come atimes with so much pains
Why suffer some before take them?

I want to know how much you gain
For each and every pain you cause
Why strike deals too with mere mortals
And let them summon you at will?

How did you become cheap and weak
And respond to just any call
Not minding if it's your master's
How much more shameless can you be?

Please take this plea to your master
Tell him to hold tightly your reins
And deny men free use of you
You are his tool and his alone!

I am Alozor Michael Ikechukwu, a thirty two years old Nigerian Navy personnel who hails from Umumbo in Ayamelum LGA of Anambra State. In 1998, my father was transferred from Lagos to Imo state and I suddenly found myself in the midst of strangers whose orientations were at loggerheads with mine. Ideas kept growing and I needed release. Poetry came to my aid and since then, I have never ceased writing. In my environment and everything around me I see inspiration, however most of my poems, tell my story as they are borne from personal experiences and imaginations. In poetry, I found an avenue to let go my wild imaginations hoping people will read and know they are not alone in some thoughts they consider odd.

31 DAYS OF POETRY- DAY 31- WALKING AWAY- by Adedayo Agarau

water is the essence
or is it life that begins the sentence
of a moving man?
we flow into places,
our legs are small streams.
healing comes with a picture,
But when you are blind, it comes in lyrics.
the last time I tried to neglect water,
I was found floating in a dead room.
the noise there was of markets,
of confused men writing home their stories,
of tired tongues flapping endlessly in lost winds,
of gifted hands tying some other bodies to gallows
where they make them barbecue for religious
or sexual preferences —a cadaver for others to dissect.
sometimes, I want to write a poem, so dry
like the vagina of my grandmother,
but the randiness of this corrupt city
teaches me to bath again,
every time, before a poem,
i go to the river for baptism.
—for god so love the world
that he carved us in a cubicle of water
that we may become whole again
and walk away,
but I am still trying to make my eyes retire,
my grandmother is dead again,
and tonight, the thieves shot her.

GOOD MORNING- Spoken Word Poem by Foursyte Bogani

$

Good morning this morning, here’s a cup of tea for you this morning,
Wipe the sleep from your eyes, while you're yawning.
As a witness, to the works of Christ like Jehovah's Witness,
I've trailed the crest beneath the deepest,
Hope your nightmares were the sweetest.
Now we are neighbours to the moon and the star,
we have come this far with no man made car.

Good morning!
Life is a black man it can never be fair
by grace we are the lucky once to breath this air.
So be grateful to him, be praise full with hymns,
whatever it seems, be alive with your dreams.
Martin Luther king once had a dream, of you, of me,
Free from segregation; I raise my right hand for this revolution.

Chorus:
Good morning is a simple knowledge;
Right now we are taking back our stolen courage.
Good morning, Good morning, Good morning, Good morning

Good morning!
Kiss the poetry from my lips, Cup the feel in a golden chalice
Let’s fantasize, fraternize, and commonize, without a benefit of malice.
The beauty of life, lies in our gold mine,
if you know the truth you're not blind.
Ignorance traffics how the man goes;
Knowledge is more than a basket full of mangoes.
Where the light is dim, I’m there to enlighten,
When the thunder strikes you should be the lighten.

Good morning!
Spread the disease of happiness before night falls like leaf from a tree
Here's our sparkling silver, we owe no debt to gloomy sadness,
The worst things of life are given for free.
The clock is out no time to haggle,
Tie a rope around your Adams apple.
For today speaks of tomorrow, tomorrow speaks of another day,
Only a legend dies today and still lives tomorrow,

Chorus:

Good morning is a simple knowledge
Right now we are taking back our stolen courage
Good morning, Good morning, Good morning, Good morning

WE ARE AS GUILTY AS OUR LEADERS- Issues in Our Society- by Shola Olayiwola

$
0
0
A colleague of mine was lamenting about the state of things in Nigeria. He complained bitterly about the state of the economy, corruption, insecurity, the leadership of the country among others. He believed that government has not done enough for the country and the leaders are only representing their selfish interest. As a matter of fact he doesn’t see anything good about the country. There is no doubt that my friend is right. Of course, we all know these problems. If I may ask, is it only the government that is guilty? I asked my friend the same question and he said yes, because the government controls everything. Aren’t we as guilty as those in government? How you may ask? When politicians came knocking at our doors canvassing for votes, promising heaven and earth while distributing various gift items including money, we should have known they were investing and like every businessman they would want to recoup their invest with interest. We became guilty when we accept those gift items. Moreover, we must learn to hold our elected leaders accountable.

There are other areas we have also failed as followers but we think they don’t matter. Nigerians are known for their religiosity, but while the average American would wake up in the morning and say God bless America, the same cannot be said about Nigerians. I am most amazed at the crowd of religious gathering in the country but I would be surprised if praying for the progress of the country is part of the prayer request of all of them. In most cases, it is all about our selfish interest, yet the Holy Book enjoined us to pray for the peace and progress of our ‘Jerusalem’, our country.

We admire the beautiful serene environment in most of the advance countries we see on television, yet we prefer to throw nylons and other waste of items we buy in traffic on the road instead of leaving them in the vehicle and thereafter dispose it properly. Worst still, some people prefer to keep their garbage until it rains, so that they can throw them inside drainage for it to flow away. Aren’t they doing injustice to the country?

While those who belief in the country are working day and night to improve the economy of the country, some people are busy smuggling goods that are available in the country without considering the harm they are doing to the country because of the appetites of Nigerians for foreign goods. I tell you, every time you favor foreign products ahead of quality Nigeria product, you are not doing the country any good as well, and you are also guilty. Imagine what would happen to those workers if they are laid off because the company does not enjoy enough of patronage. You are guilty whenever you prefer cheap pirated Nigeria films instead of the original. Every time you buy smuggled turkey and chickens from Benin Republic, you are also guilty. Maybe I should remind you that those frozen foods are preserved with the same chemical used to embalm human corpse.

We want a violence free society, yet we do not respect other peoples’ tribe and religion but choose to speak and act against them. I hope you know your actions create an atmosphere for insecurity. Every time you go against the traffic and you try to bribe the police to look the other way, you are also guilty. You may think these little things don’t count, I bet you, you are wrong. Every time you refuse to do the right thing, you are also guilty. We are as guilty as our leaders.

YOU WEREN'T THERE- a Poem by Daramola Kayode Babalola

Judgment!
Sentence passed without recourse

an essential commodity for which everyone is an expert

Bad. Wrong. Evil. Inadequate. Not good enough.

Too short. Too fat. Too ugly. Always coming short

Slut. Hoe. Whore, snore. Bore. Always at fault.

But you weren’t there!

When the atrocities for which you blame me are being forged.

Two brothers, taking my pride without so much as a polite ask

Distant parents, absent of barest care, deficient of feelings , always about the task

Where were you bruv?

Big Sir in golden tux, senior Ma in purple fur,

Lost. Cold. Breakfast. Brunch. Dinner. Cover. Shelter.
All a giant blur.
Beg. hustle. Scavenge. Eat or be eaten.
Run or be ran over, a constant victim of slur
Every waking, a constant battle.
Hoping. Praying. scared. Scarred.
Always trying to get yourself off the floor

So before you open your trap to strap me

Understand that though I do not use my situation
to excuse me,
you weren’t there!
when I was earning my stripes,
treating my bruises.
Didn’t see what I saw, didn’t feel what I felt
And please, note this and take it to heart:

of the certainty of a beautiful future, there is no question
But I will make it on my own terms.

THE DYING LION- a Poem by John Oguntuase

Slowly,very slowly
An aged rabbit walks
closely ,tightly closely
A baby antelope stares
To the claws and jaw
a signal wired
Like yesterday his head he lift
but in
shame he bows
The lunch is gone
!
no longer can he launch
Though the appetite remains
on this spot he must remain
yesterday's victory yet speak
His current state the Hyenas know
How painful to pray as prey
Tomorrow he shall be a lunch too.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS, TOP 50 CONTEMPORARY POETS WHO ROCKED NIGERIA IN YEAR 2016

$
0
0
Few years ago, non-poets rarely invite Poets to non-poetry events in Nigeria. The art was like the least art and the most placed in the background here. Though it could not be said that Poetry is mainstream entertainment like Music, Comedy, and Movie yet; things have changed.

More Radio/TV shows now feature poetry, more books were published, more poetry festivals were held, and more events are springing up. There seem to be many new Poets and they look good to stay up for a long time. More so, a lot of poets are coming up with new things, they call for at least applause/appreciations if not awards plaques.

This is a call for You to join us to nominate the Poets whom you feel really rocked Nigeria in the outgoing year (2016). Please note that by ‘Rock’, we do not mean the best Poets in Nigeria; we mean those whose impacts were really felt in various categories where Poets/poetry is concerned. The categories we consider for this year are:

a.      Page Poet of the year
B.      Spoken Word Poetof the year
C.       Poetry Promoter of the year
D.      Cross over poet of the year

NOTE:
1.      If there is any poet you would like to be in your list but he/she is older than 50 years old, please place them in (E) Honorary mention category.

2.      This is not a ‘Please nominate me’ thing, kindly nominate Poets based on your conviction alone.

3.      Minimum of 15 and maximum of 25 names are required for nominations in each of these categories. Nominations not made in categories (A-D) above will not be counted.

4.      Number your nominations, your number '1' will be scored higher than number '10'/'16'/etc.

5.      For those who are yet to understand the Cross over category, it is meant for Poets who venture into other arts such as Prose, Drama, Film, Music, Visual arts, etc.  Also note that there will be top 10 Poets in each category and there will be eventual Top 5o (who are poets with highest nominations).

6.      People who are actually not proven to be Poets will be removed from the list (this excludes those in poetry promotion category).

HOW WE GRADE
Points from nominations will be graded 35% (EGC focused group), 35% (Poets Panel, i.e. People we are sure of their knowledge about Nigerian Poets. Their identity will not be made public), 30% (General nominations) where anybody can nominate. This is important as we desire near 100% accuracy in this survey (we know nobody can get it right 100% though), let us at least do it together and do it better. Poets are please advised not to call for anyone to nominate them; send in your own nominations and let others send your own name on merit.

BELOW ARE SIMPLE THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN NOMINATING POETS FOR EACH CATEGORY:
1.       IMPACT: are the works of these Poets felt by a lot of people in Nigeria?
2.       ORIGIN: are these Poets Nigerians?
3.       AGE: are these Poets between 1-50 years old?
4.       REASON: why are we nominating these Poets?
5.       SINCERITY: am I sincere with my nominations or biased?

NOMINATION WINDOW OPENS 9TH NOVEMBER 2016 AND CLOSES 10TH DECEMBER 2016.

Probably one of the best Spoken word pieces in year 2016. After his performance of same at BB14/Full Proof movie premiere some members of the audience asked for the video among few others... But we thought his performance at GoPoethick was better. So here is "Silence" by Adedayo Agarau ft Victor Adewale, performed at GoPoethick 2016, in OAU.

In other news, FULL PROOF movie will now be released on DVD in year 2017... Let's keep our hopes alive :)

TOP 20

20. Olamiposi Omoyele
Her strength lies in content development and project coordination. Omoyele rocked the year more for her writings online and with the promotion of Be Blessed Poetry event in Ibadan, all the way from Lagos. She is a much sought after fish who takes time in choosing the water she swims. From nominations received, Omoyele was rated number 3 Page Poet in Nigeria for year 2016.

19. Edaoto Agbeniyi
A Poet cum singer who is always playful, he is an extra-ordinary talent who apart from rocking the year with his music got featured on Akeem Lasisi’s spoken word Poetry videos. He has also joined the growing population who promote budding Poets in Lagos. From nominations received, Edaoto was rated Number 6 Cross over Poet in Nigeria for year 2016.

18. Foursyte Bogani
Poet, rapper and actor, Foursyte has always been known to stand in-between being a spoken word Poet and a rapper. He delved more into the latter this year and has a growing population of fans to show for it. The Port-Harcourt based Poet also ensured he traveled as far as he could in the year to promote his art. From nominations received, Foursyte was rated Number 4 Cross over Poet and Number 10 Spoken word Poet in Nigeria for year 2016.

17. Rudolf Adidi RuddaPoet
He was said to have a thick voice that could melt a block of ice. He won ALS Slam this year. And that added to the things that made people like him. Yet he didn’t relent, performing all over the place, Abuja, Jos, et al and gaining recognitions. From nominations received, Rudolf was rated Number 6 Spoken word Poet in Nigeria for year 2016.

16. Iquo DianaAbasi Eke
Some call her a goddess. The way she infuses African flavor into her Poetry performances will make you concur. The author of symphony of Becoming proved her stamina as both a page and a stage Poet all through the year. Her work as online news personnel also added feathers to her cap. From nominations received, Iquo did not make Top 10 in any of the 4 categories, but accumulation of points from nominations in all categories got her into Top 20.

15. Prestige Ifeanyi Bernard
His Poetry hang-out,Expressit’ gave more Poets in Lagos an opportunity to express themselves. But the former BB Slam Champion also moved out of his comfort zone, performing in various shows in various states. The spoken word piece he did with Paul Word, ‘Death & Dreams’, was also a ‘hit’ in the year. From nominations received, Prestige was rated Number 8 Spoken word Poet in Nigeria for year 2016.

14. Olulu Olumide Holloway
The convener of ‘War of Words Africa’ and ‘Wordup’ has big dreams and he was not afraid to dare. Though the big project he planned for the year did not get as big as expected he was consistent with the promotion he did all through the year. He is based in Lagos and has connection with many Poets all over the country. From nominations received, Olulu was rated Number 6 Poetry promoter in Nigeria for year 2016.

13. Ayokunle Komson Komolafe
His ‘Vivid Verses’ radio show in Lagos was probably the most consistent in the outgone year. He was also seen at many Poetry events, even when not officially invited, mingling with both budding and established Poets. He is one of the few who really know what they are doing in Poetry promotion and are making a slow and consistent run to the top. From nominations received, Ayokunle was rated Number 5 Poetry promoter in Nigeria for year 2016.

12. Victor Adewale (Veekthur LyricPoet)
Victor is a Singer, Poet and does Photography with his Techno phone, focusing mostly on silhouette shots. He traveled wide in the year and got involved in a lot of Poetry projects. But the most memorable one would be how he successfully executed his annual GoPoethick festival in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife Osun state, even when the school was on strike. From nominations received, Victor was rated Number 3 cross over and Number 10 Poetry promoter in year 2016.

11. Soonest Nathaniel
Soonest is not a new name in Nigerian Poetry circles. But many who follow what Spoken word Poets do will know he was instrumental to promotion of many via Naij Videos. He used his opportunity as a staff of the online media platform well, and many Poets knew he rocked with that. He is also a page and stage Poet whose steam remains hot. From nominations received, Soonest was rated Number 9 Poetry promoter in Nigeria for year 2016.

TOP 10

10. Enigmatic Olumide

He is a Poet, professional photographer and film maker.  His movie, ‘Full Proof’ was premiered in October at Ibadan and the film whose focus is on a boy who entered in a street boxing championship in order to save his mother who was dying of cancer is expected on DVD before mid-2017. His resourcefulness is probably his biggest strength; he is known to always think up new ways of doing things and pioneering many things like the quarterly Poetry and sundry talent event in Ibadan, 31 days of Poetry to celebrate Nigerian Poets for a month annually, the first annual Poets ranking survey in Nigeria, etc. His written works has been featured in several anthologies and he has performed in all geo-political zones of Nigeria.

From nominations received, Olumide was rated Number 2 Cross over Poet and Number 7 Poetry promoter for year 2016.

9. Donna The Poet
Popularly known as the Queen of Spoken words in Nigeria, Donna remains a mother figure to many budding Poets in Nigeria. This was evident in the Master Class she organized in Lagos before the close of the year, ‘Perfecting The Mould’, with Poets coming from as far as Jos. She also produced a stage theatre earlier in the year that was a blend of spoken word Poetry into dramatic performance. The award winning oil and gas lawyer played in the big leagues, attending some of the biggest events at times as a guest, and at other times just to experience. She also did a number of public speaking and lectures at events organized by other people/organizations in the year.

From nominations received, Donna was rated Number 5 Spoken word Poet in Nigeria for year 2016.

8. Samurai (Olayinka Samson Aremu)
Only few people know him as a rapper, Samurai is more known as a dexterous spoken word Poet. His Poetry video, ‘Ants Race’, was one of the few that ‘hit’ the Poetry world when year 2016 began. But the hard working young man did not stop there, he graced as many events as he can performing his poems and connecting with like minds. He also tried his voice in the Abuja ALS slam all the way from Lagos in his bid to explore more. He is also known to often move around with his girlfriend, Kemistree, reason why people call them ‘Poetry couple’, but they were not seen together too many times in the outgone year. There is however no cause for alarm.

From nominations received, Samurai was rated Number 4 Spoken word Poet in Nigeria for year 2016.

7. Adedayo Adeyemi Agarau

Triple A as he is regarded is one of the emerging voices of Nigerian Poetry world. His story was one with a twist, when year 2016 began he was contemplating leaving spoken word and focusing on page Poetry. He could have, but for some friends; the end of the year saw him to be known as one of the strongest Poetry performers in the year. He also published his book, ‘For Boys Who Went’, before the year said goodbye. Adedayo is often called the ‘Ibadan Poet’ or ‘Quality Poets’, the first having a link with his walls of Ibadan photo documentaries and the latter being a blog he started few years ago.

From nominations received, Adedayo was rated Number 4 Page Poet and Number 10 Cross Over Poet in Nigeria for year 2016.

6. Uche Uwadinachi

Poet, radio show producer and actor, Uche is a bundle of unique talents. He is one of the few who has always used their influence in secular jobs to connect and promote Poets. But his strength might just be his performance; he captivates the audience each time he grabs the microphone. Though playing a newscaster in Full Proof movie might not be the first time he would be acting, he showed he may just end up to be a movie producer in future. His delivery and coordination was impressive. His organization, Flames Media, continues to work in the background but never invincible in Lagos.

From nominations received, Uche was rated Number 6 Cross over Poet in Nigeria for year 2016.

5. Sage Has.son

Nigeria’s premiere spoken wordPoet showed neither age nor time can take the best ones away, just like that. He maintained his presence over the years, though trying to leave the spoken word Poetry scene. Aside his published books, one area Sage will cling to and utilize to the fullest might just be Film making. He was also seen on National TV acting in the year. Before now, he was rumoured to be delving into music and music promotion but the film/acting part hit a lot of people with surprise. His versatility and adaptability is reflective and worthy of emulation.

From nominations received, Sage was rated Number 1 Cross over Poet in Nigeria for year 2016.

4. Kukogho Iruesiri Samson  (KIS)

‘Restless and daring’ may just be the best words to describe this award winning Poet. He went to Ibadan, all the way from his base in Abuja and organized ‘Feast of Words’ – an event that was like a total package for the Poets who follow him, giving awards, books, interviews, and closing the show with a dance later at night. The CEO of WRR publishing outfit was also a lover of budding Poets, and this was evident in the way he promoted them all through the year, producing several books along the way. He also used his Authorpedia (online store) to promote works of various Poets.

From nominations received, KIS was rated Number 1 Page Poet and Number 2 Poetry promoter in Nigeria for year 2016.

3. Efe Paul Azino

When Vodka Company uses your image to promote their products upon entering Nigeria, you know you have attained a star status. Efe Paul Azino is among the few who can be said to be among Apex Poets in Nigeria. Little wonder, companies like Nigerian Breweries sponsored his annual Lagos Poetry festival successively. This revolutionary Poet has done well for himself by not over-exposing himself yet linking himself up with the high and mighty of our contemporary world. He is internationally known and spent a number of days outside Nigeria because of Poetry in the outgone year.

From nominations received, Efe Paul was rated Number 3 Spoken word Poet, and number 4 Poetry promoter in Nigeria for year 2016.

2. Dike Chukwumerije

His works includeAbuja Literary Society activities and Simply Poetry. Dike Chukwumerije’s works in the outgone year is a sign that there is hope for Poetry in Nigeria. Having made sold out shows in Abuja, he came down to Lagos and did extra-ordinarily well with his Made in Nigeria concert for someone who is not based in Lagos. The infusion of theatre into his show was phenomenal. The 2012 National Poetry slam champion was always working, when not performing, writing, planning, making us to see more clearly that Poetry can actually put food on the table in Nigeria.

From nominations received, Dike was rated Number 1 Poetry promoter and Number 2 Spoken word Poet in Nigeria for year 2016.

1. Graciano Enwerem
Graciano was once described as a man who commands his following in unusual ways. He may be among the few in the world to ever enter a Slam, come out 3rd, yet earn money from the slam more than the winner of Slam. The Owerri and Port Harcourt based Poet was rumoured to achieve this feat at ALS slam in Abuja towards the end of the year. As a leader in Figures Of Speech online forum and Seaview Poetry Club, Graciano mentors a lot of people across Africa, and a contact with him will make you see he knows what he teaches in his workshops, online programs and radio open mics. He is a Poet, football coach, media consultant and Spoken word artiste.

From nominations received, Graciano was rated Number 1 Spoken word Poet, number 2 page Poet, and Number 3 Poetry promoter in Nigeria for year 2016.

NB: The earlier post on this thread was a mistake via communication. Here is the actual post meant for Armed Forces remembrance day:

“Captain Ewe go and pack your things, you will be going to Danku to takeover.” said the Commander of Strike Group IV, one of the units involved in the fight against the Terrorists Group who wanted a secession from Atupa Kingdom. The Company Commander at Danku has just been killed alongside 12 of his men in an ambush and there is an urgent need to deploy another commander. Capt Ewe immediately packed few of his belongings and set out to Danku. Captain Ewe is no stranger to most of the troops in Danku. He is known to be an incorruptible, strict and no nonsense officer.

“In a minute, he is cracking jokes with his soldiers and the next minute he takes disciplinary action against anyone who disobeys his orders. In fact he is the real no-compromise”. This was an account of one of the soldiers to another on arrival of Captain Ewe to Danku town.

The war against the Terrorists group has intensified and it seems the terrorists group was having the upper hand. The terrorists group has succeeded in instilling fear in the mind of most of the soldiers in the Kingdom. Not too long after Captain Ewe took over at Danku, news filtered in that the dreaded group has succeeded in taking over Gbamu town and few days after, they took over another town called Fuka. Captain Ewe's parent unit is at Gbamu and with the takeover of the town by terrorists; it means he won’t be able to get resupply of food and other logistics like ammunition. Danku town is in the middle of both Gbamu and Fuka and the 2 units dislodged from the town were more equipped than the company in Danku. Several attempts were made to takeover Danku by the terrorists but Ewe and his men fought gallantly to repel them, in the process losing few men. Ewe knew it's only a matter of time before the terrorists takeover Danku considering that they are in the middle of the adversaries. Captain Ewe wanted to hold Danku with his men for as long as possible hoping that the troops dislodged at both Gbamu and Fuka would regroup early enough to recapture the lost 2 towns and thus prevent Danku from falling. This however was not to be as the terrorists became more daring, seizing more towns and villages under Atupa Kingdom. At this point, Ewe's men began to pressurize him on the need to withdraw from Danku. One of his men even confronted him publicly asking him if his aim was to sacrifice them. Ewe simply responded that it wasn't time to withdraw.

To prevent the terrorists from staging a surprise, Ewe led his men on ambush every night killing several terrorists in the process. The late commander at Danku preferred to remain in the defense, as such the troops initially thought it was a risky venture. Soon Ewe's men gained confidence and would always disturb him to lead them on ambush every night. Ewe ensured that the ambush is done at different spot every day.  The support weapons and ammunitions recovered from terrorists were used to strengthen his defense line. Still not sure whether he would make it out of Danku alive, he decided to call the mother of his son and told her that should he not make it out of there alive, he pleaded with her not to deny his family members access to his son particularly his younger brother. The only way to make it out of Danku was to go through the neighbouring Kingdom, so Ewe went to liaise with the elite guard stationed at the border to allow him and his men have safe passage, so he could go to Alara where the troops that survived the terrorists’ onslaught were camped. The elite guard assured him they would be allowed to pass. On the day they were withdrawing from Danku, Ewe ensured that his men didn’t leave any of their belonging behind. On arrival at Alara, the senior commander there was surprised that Ewe and his men remained in Danku for close to a month despite the danger. He was even more surprised that Ewe ensured that none of the equipment was left behind and even came with weapons captured from the terrorists. He narrated how one of his commanders had left his major equipment behind while withdrawing from his location.

“Young man, what’s your rank?” Asked the senior commander.
“I’m Captain Ewe sir”.
“Your performance exceeds your rank.”

Captain Ewe was lucky to have made it to safety with his men and perhaps see their families again. Many of their gallant colleagues never had the chance to go back to their loved ones again. They paid the supreme price while fighting to keep their beloved kingdom together. Some, their loved ones didn't have the chance to say good bye. Today many officers and men of our armed forces and other security agents are on the field fighting militancy, insurgency, violent herdsmen, kidnapping and other social vices against the peace and progress of our land. Let us not relent in our support and prayers for them. Some have lost their lives in the process, let us endeavour to show love to those they left behind. God bless our security personnel.

Shola Ola’ loves to write and defend the course of his country. This article was his special way to celebrate Armed Forces Remembrance Day 2017.

LIVING- A Poem by Richard HighOnWord Abutu

Eyes fixed on unseen things
Mind set on unknown things
Feet walking on unknown paths
Before we were, we were not

We open our eyes to see what we have not seen
Blind the eyes that have seen it all!
We are not going to where we are coming from
We are going to where we have not been at all

If we come to the red sea, we'll part it
Axe head falls into the sea; We'll make it flow
On the sea, facing the storm, we'll calm it
Hungry and many; Seven baskets full

We live to see and do the undone
Not to sit and eat but to sing the unsung
We are living to live again.
If you don't live once, you won't live again

The man that says he has not, should not be given
He that has not, his little will be taken
The rich becomes richer, the poor becomes poorer
It's not a crime, but a Divine order

I cherish the life I live
It is beautiful to live
I'm not angry that I was born
Pains and storms; I'm glad to be born

I have the chance to be what I was not
A chance to see what I did not
A chance to go where I was not

A chance to be transfigured, to be transformed
Before I was, I was not
